Clunky Goes Retro

KristenComment

Shirt (I honestly have no clue where I got this! If I can find it I'll update this. I'm sorry!). Pants. Sneakers. Glasses (similar).

I've been feeling very retro lately. Last night, I made a playlist of kind-of old songs, like songs from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. Some are rock-ish, some are pure pop, but they all make me wanna jump up and dance! Maybe that's why, when I walked into my closet today, I pulled out this MTV shirt that I've literally never worn. I used to have an adorable MTV tank top that I wore as often as I could, but one day I lent it to my friend and when she gave it back to me I left it in her boyfriend's suite and I don't know where it is now :(

I really like this top because it's kind of a crop top, but kind of not. It looks like it's a little short on me, but it's just the way it's cut. But it doesn't look weird! It looks adorable with these high-waisted jeans. I basically only wear high-waisted pants. I then wore white Converse because it made everything look a bit cooler for some reason. I totally could've went with black to match the letters, but the white ones were just calling to me. I feel like this is a daily dilemma: black Converse vs. white Converse. My red ones are just chillin' in the corner, all clean and waiting for a time when I need a pop of color.

I straightened my hair today, and I love when my hair is straightened so I loved how I looked. I think that's why I was smiling so big! I just felt really good. I went very light with my makeup, including light mascara. My new e.l.f. foundation makes it really easy to go light without it looking weird. This makeup is so much more natural and I really like it. I feel like it's more natural and fresh-faced than I'm-Not-Wearing-Makeup. Not wearing makeup is totally fine, but I wanted to glow at least a little bit.

I matched my Pura Vidas with my shirt, as per usual, and ditched the necklace again! I felt like since the shirt was relatively high-necked, a necklace would've looked weird. It might've clunked on into the design and things wouldn't be pretty. Then, to keep up the retro, I went with my round sunglasses. I love those freakin' things, weird bar at the top and all.

I feel like I've had less and less to say lately, and maybe it's because I'm much more decisive than usual. It's not that I'm not taking risks, but I guess I'm just figuring out my personal style a little bit more. It's a new season that I'm finally setting into, as well as a new mindset. A lot of stuff has been changing lately, and I feel like my look is as well. I guess we'll see what continues to happen!

Clunky out~

(God that was bad I'm so sorry)

Boring Day

KristenComment

One of my favorite moments in life is when I look in the mirror and I'm completely happy with how I look. Obviously, looking great isn't all that makes me happy, but it definitely does contribute to my joy. As I've mentioned before, fashion and makeup are how I express how I'm feeling inside. It works both ways. If I'm not feeling too great, I'll purposely dress in ways that make me feel great. My mother told me that when my grandma was dying of breast cancer, until her final days, she would always get out of bed and get dressed, do her hair, and do her makeup. How kickass is that?! Every now and then it's great to be lazy, but sometimes putting on real clothes is just what I need.

Today, for example, I was down and sweaty (I went to the gym for the first time in forever!). I walked into my closet, pulled some stuff out, put it on, and felt happy. Oh, the magic of clothes.

I decided to wear this Fall Out Boy sweatshirt since it was Pete Wentz's birthday yesterday and he is one of the sexiest men I've ever laid eyes on (as well as being a very talented bassist), so why not celebrate?! I actually love this sweatshirt a lot. It's super comfortable and I love the pattern in the words. Some people aren't a fan of long sleeves and shorts, but I actually really love the way it looks. Usually, I wear this sweatshirt with dark blue jeans and a bandana, but it was hot today and my hair was frizzy so I went with shorts and ditched the bandana. Then, I took the extra step and tucked my shirt into my pants because why not? I liked the way it looked! Originally, I went with black Converse, but I switched to white. I like the way white Converse look with these shorts because they're so light.

Then, I did my makeup. I kept everything light (even my eyelashes!) except for my lips. I don't know why, but I was feeling a little bit of pink gloss, and I liked the way it turned out! I haven't worn this gloss in forever. I really should wear it more often.

I also kept jewelry simple, with a brighter Pura Vida bracelet that you can't see in the photo since I'm wearing long sleeves. I also ditched the usual necklace as well!

I guess I don't have a whole lot to say about this look, other than that I'm happy wearing this. Stay tuned for what tomorrow brings!

Cruelty-Free Updates!

Beauty, Beauty Review, Cruelty-FreeKristenComment

The other day, I told you guys about all the cruelty-free products I bought! I had used some, but not the tarte sunscreen, Lavanila deodorant, and some of the e.l.f. products. Since I’ve just been in my pajamas all day, I figured I’d give y’all an update.

What I Was Using: Secret Scent Expressions Invisible Solid Deodorant (sometimes in Va Va Vanilla, others in Cocoa Butter Kiss), Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 100+, Maybelline Dream Blender

What I’m Using Now: Lavanila, The Healthy Deodorant (in Pure Vanilla), tarteguard 30 sunscreen lotion broad spectrum SPF 30, e.l.f Concealer Brush, e.l.f Daily Brush Cleaner

When I ran out of deodorant, I decided to find one that was not only cruelty-free, but also aluminum-free. I have no clue why, but apparently it’s a very common practice to put aluminum in deodorant. I don’t want that under my arms, especially since studies show that aluminum-based deodorant is linked to causing breast cancer. I didn’t think an aluminum-free, cruelty-free deodorant existed until I came across Cruelty-Free Kitty’s post about it! That’s where I found Lavanila.

I bought the trial size of Lavanila just in case I didn’t like it, but I’ll be buying the big-girl size at Sephora as soon as I run out of the tiny one. I absolutely love it! It sounds weird, but I can actually feel the deodorant working as soon as I put it on. It smells amazing, and I smell amazing all day, even when I’m riding bikes on the boardwalk or running around at work. I seriously recommend it.

As for the tarte sunscreen, I’m honestly indifferent. The pros are that it smells good (not like sunscreen, but good), dries quickly since it’s meant to be worn under makeup, and goes a long way (one pump can cover my entire face!). The things I don’t like are that the formula is very thin, so it makes my face really shiny. It’s okay when I wear it under my makeup, but when I go makeup-free I just look like I’m sweating a lot. Also, it’s only SPF 30. My e.l.f. Foundation has some SPF 15 sunscreen in it, so if sunscreen math is the same as real math, I guess I’m wearing SPF 45. My Neutrogena sunscreen was SPF 100+, and I’ve heard that any SPF over 45 isn’t legit, so I’m not exactly sure what to think. Also, my Neutrogena sunscreen fought wrinkles! However, it tests on animals, so bye-bye Neutrogena. I found this sunscreen on this post by PETA, and I bought the trial size. I might be exploring the other options on the list. I’ll keep you guys updated!

On to makeup, I’ve been loving e.l.f.’s concealer brush. It makes under-eye application ten times easier and does a really good job of covering my zits! As for the brush cleaner, I’m not so sure yet. It smells good and is working on the concealer brush, but my foundation brush is still a little gross. It could be because it’s thicker and handles a lot more makeup than the concealer brush, but still. I’m not sure if it makes a difference, but I used the foundation brush a few times before I started cleaning it, while I started cleaning the concealer brush right after I started using it. I've also never used brushes/brush cleaners, so I have nothing to compare it to. I definitely need to get the weekly brush shampoo too.

As always, I’ll keep you guys updated on these products and any other products I’ll be buying soon. If you have any recommendations for any type of cruelty-free products, please let me know in the comments! Clunk it up!

Sucker

KristenComment

Top (similar). Skirt (no longer being sold at Wet Seal). Shoes. (no longer being sold at Payless). Choker (I ripped the spider off!).

Charli XCX is my spirit animal. I discovered her last year after I decided that I had to hear more than "Boom Clap," and I fell in love. Charli's no-fucks-given attitude appealed to me. It shines through in her music and in her presence in general.

Charli's style is similar to her music. It's very girly, but also a bit grungy. Some of her lyrics are sweet and sensitive, but others are brutally honest. Musically, she's like a mix of pop and alternative. It's the type of music that makes you want to jump around your room and sing into your hairbrush, but in an angsty, big-girl way.

So, when I was feeling angsty today, I got some of Charli's songs stuck in my head. I figured that there was no better way to channel my angst than to steal Charli's look!

I started with this cute schoolgirl-y skirt that I bought a little while ago. I love it because it fits my body type perfectly, highlighting my waist, hips, and butt! Then, I added one of my favorite black crop tops with some cutouts on the sides. It's a little ~risque~, but not too revealing. I added some black heels to make the look equal parts girly and goth and a choker because this is Charli, after all.  I threw my hair in a small pony on the top of my head and left the rest down. I've only seen Charli wear her hair like this once or twice; usually she just parts her hair to the side and keeps it a little messy, but I thought this hair just went with the rest of the look.

I originally had my varsity jacket picked out to go with this, but I actually liked it a lot better without it. If I were to wear this outfit out and I needed a jacket, I would definitely go with the varsity one, but I liked how you could see a bit more ~skin~ without it.

Doing the makeup for this was so much fun I started with minimal concealer and foundation since Charli's face is usually very light. I added a bit of copper eyeshadow that was a little lighter than what Charli usually wears. Then, I piled on the eyeliner, something I never do. I clumped it up on the outer corners of my eye, which is how Charli does it. I sprinkled a bit of eyeshadow under my eyes, then  used a Q-tip to smear the heavy eyeliner downwards into the eyeshadow. Then, I went back over the liner, making it super dark. It  blended with the smudges perfectly. I only added mascara to the tips of my eyelashes, but generously applied it to my bottom lashes. I ended up getting some mascara under my eyes, but it went withthe look perfectly. To top it off, I used Charli's signature lipstick. I picked red!

I really love this look for two reasons: I look cute and I feel confident. As soon as I put this on, I knew that it would be a new look that I would try to wear more often. These were two of my favorite pieces, but I never thought to put them together until now. Even though these shoes are uncomfortable, I could add black boots or sneakers. I also felt like I could totally take over the world, which Charli sings about in her music. For the first time in a while, I felt hot. I stared at myself in the mirror and sang along with the lyrics to "Sucker," really feeling the part. I just felt like a complete badass. I was sad taking this outfit off.

I'm so happy that this recreation actually worked out, especially after what happened when I tried to recreate Him. I got another really cool outfit out of it, and it gave me a much-needed confidence boost!

Cruelty-Free Makeup Mini Haul!

All of these products are linked in the post!

My beautiful NARS lipgloss <3

I'm not trying to preach at all, but I'm about to talk about some stuff that I recently learned and am very uncomfortable with. If it makes you severely uncomfortable, feel free to stop reading and skip down to the actual product review! I figured that if I didn't know about this stuff, neither would my readers. In the meantime, be sure to check out @theclunkster on Instagram!

Recently, I looked a little deeper into what animal testing was and it made me so upset. I didn't realize the amount of harm that the substances that are tested on animals can do. I thought testing was just putting makeup on mice to see if they would break out or something, which still wasn't okay with me, but I figured that there was no way to avoid companies that do test on animals. I was completely wrong.

I found out that animals who are held captive in testing facilities are injected with substances, forced to inhale certain chemicals, and basically ripped apart. Some of the products that are tested cause animals' skin to be literally burnt off. And it's not just mice, it's bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters, farm animals, monkeys, and even cats and dogs. I thought about my innocent little puppy, the one I love more than anything, being tied down and tortured just so my lips would be a different color. These animals never escape, either. Most animals in testing facilities are bred to be tortured and then killed shortly after these harmful tests are conducted.

After some more research, I found out that there are so many companies (both drugstore and quality brands!) that don't test on animals and are doing just fine. I realized that I've been using products at the expense of other animals when I could be using ethical products from companies that use other ways to test their products, ways that are actually cheaper and more accurate, which I found out after more research. If products are doing these horrible things to animals, there is a chance that these products could have the same reaction on me, which I really didn't like.

It turns out that I use a lot of brands that do test on animals. Since I'm so protective over my beauty routine, I decided that I would try replace these products with cruelty-free brands as I ran out of things, mostly so I feel a bit more comfortable, but also in an effort to save money. Since I ran out of foundation the other day, I stopped by e.l.f. to check out their cruelty-free foundations. I walked out with foundation, concealer/highlighter, and a vegan foundation brush (which I've never used before!) so this whole experience was really new for me.

Product Review Thing

What I Previously Used: Maybelline FitMe Matte and Poreless Foundation (in Natural Ivory, 112)Maybelline Fit Me Concealer (in Fair, 15)Maybelline Dream Blender

What I'm Using Now: e.l.f. Studio Flawless Finish Foundation (in Porcelain)e.l.f. Under Eye Concealer and Highlighter (in Glow/Fair)e.l.f. Pointed Foundation Brush

The concealer, which is specific for the under-eyes (where I need it!) was really easy to put on. It was more creamy than what I'm used to , but I liked it. Working with the foundation brush was so much easier than working with a sponge! Applying my makeup felt a lot more natural, and I think it made the look of my foundation more natural as well. The foundation smelled delicious, like some sort of flower. Though the makeup was a little sticky, I think it looked a bit more natural as well. My mom loved how much less cakey it looked, and my dad noticed that my skin looked shinier, which he liked, but I don't know if I do yet. This foundation didn't really cover my pores, but then again I am used to wearing a matte and poreless foundation.

The foundation and concealer looked great in pictures. I wore them when I rode my bike on the boardwalk and they held up really well even though I was active and it was hot as hell. They held up a little less today at work when I was sweating, but that could also be because I'm all the way at the end of my setting spray so I couldn't set my makeup completely. My under eyes were a little black and smudgey from my mascara which could be from the lack of spray, or because I was wearing more mascara today than I have for the past few days.

Overall, I was really impressed with e.l.f.'s foundation and concealer! I was seriously surprised at how inexpensive their products were. I'm definitely going to have to get used to the change, but I'll keep you guys updated. e.l.f. also has matte foundations, so maybe I'll try that after I run out of this foundation.

Other Products

Since I was so impressed with e.l.f.'s products, today while I was at CVS I picked up their Daily Brush Cleaner and Concealer Brush so under eye application is just a bit easier. I also got a small sample of some sunscreen from Tarte (cruelty-free!) and a sample of Lavanila Pura Vanilla Deodorant (also cruelty-free as well as aluminum free!). I'll let you guys know how everything works out probably sometime next week!

Oh, I also got my favorite lipgloss in the whole wide world, Striptease by NARS. I've been using it for the past year and a half and I absolutely love it, but it's expensive, so I can only buy it when I have the money. In my opinion, it's totally worth it, and I was shedding happy tears while handing over my money at Sephora.

If you guys have any cruelty-free brands you love, please feel free to comment below! I need suggestions!
